     "Bet You Didn't Know" Statistics:

  • Many high school students got a great head start on their freshmen college year by taking classes through the Summer Academy. Since 1995, over 2,600 high school students have taken between 1 and 8 UCR classes through the Summer Academy for Advanced High School Students program!

  • Academically skilled high schools can successfully earn credit in UCR undergraduate classes. Over 80% of Summer Academy students earn a grade of "B" or higher in their first UCR course.

  • You probably know someone from your high school who has attended this program.  Students from 68 local and international high schools attended the Summer Academy program in 2008. WOW!

GET INVOLVED EARLY!
The UC system has put together some advice to parents hoping to send their children to college.  What's the secret formula?  Well, there's no magic bullet, and preparation for college starts as early as kindergarten.  Here's what you should know:

- Make sure your child is taking an algebra class by eighth grade.
Statistically, this is a big determination as to whether or not a child is on
the path to a four-year university.
- Once in high school, make sure your child is enrolled in college prep
  classes.
- Take four years of math and three years of a foreign language.
- Take honors and Advanced Placement courses.
- At minimum, students should strive for at least a 3.0 grade-point
average, but a higher one will increase chances for admissions at more
  selective colleges.
- Prepare for the SAT or ACT, and take the PSAT by the ninth or tenth
  grade.
- Don't forget extracurricular activities - colleges look for well-rounded
students who are involved in sports, volunteering, the arts, and student
  government.
- Meet with your child's guidance counselor.  Let him/her know you're
interested in being involved in your child's college preparation.

PLEASE NOTE:  The UCR Summer Academy is not a guaranteed admission program into the University of California.  Students interested in attending a University of California campus to obtain a post-secondary degree must submit a regular admission application. If you are a graduating high school senior this year, you are no longer eligible for the 2009 Summer Academy program; however, you can still take classes this summer through the regular Summer Sessions term as a visiting student.
